Each Monday, Alister and Meridyth deliver quick news and interesting stories from the past week to prepare you for the “water cooler” banter. They’ll also squabble over a current issue.

Alister is your classic Labour champion, while Meridyth (an American expat) brings a transatlantic, moderate view.

ALISTER: I saw my doctor, showed him my rash and he was speechless. MERIDYTH: Is it that bad? What happened next? ALISTER: Nothing, he just kept packing his groceries and left the shop. MERIDYTH: 🙄

ALISTER: Meet Jay Jones, a laid-off American who's spent 2 yrs hunting fake jobs on LinkedIn. He's helped remove nearly 60,000, incl. bogus ads on Hyundai's own page. That's LinkedIn's job, and it's time it was made to do it properly.

MERIDYTH: I completely agree it's a sad state of affairs. Real firms post fakes too. UK employers admit about 1 in 3 of their online job ads are for roles they never actually recruit for. Job hunting's exhausting enough already.

ALISTER: Scam jobs are worse. Reports to Action Fraud, the UK's fraud line, more than doubled in 2 yrs. LinkedIn profits from job ads, so it should verify every employer upfront and be fined when fakes slip through.

MERIDYTH: LinkedIn blocked nearly 90m fake accounts in late 2025 alone. Fining it for every miss makes hiring slower and pricier. Make firms share whether a vacancy's real instead, as Ontario Canada has since January.

ALISTER: A tick box only works if someone checks it. Firms caught posting fake jobs should be named publicly. Every firm hates being known for wasting people's time, so that will stop it fast. LinkedIn should face the same.

MERIDYTH: Naming the repeat offenders, fine. But most ghost jobs come from firms keeping their options open or hoarding CVs. Make them confirm a role is real, and people can put their energy into the jobs that are

Astronomers studying nine galaxies found their central black holes belch out plasma jets that sculpt star formation for thousands of light years. Messy but it works, just like sharing The AM Squabble!

📊 Anyone's game. Labour leads a new YouGov poll on 23%, with the Tories and Reform tied on 21%. It's Reform's lowest since early 2025, blamed partly on a new PM, sleaze claims and Restore Britain, the party of ex-Reform MP Rupert Lowe. Too close to call… 🤷

🇪🇺 Here we go again. Tony Blair says Britain should work towards rejoining the EU within 10 yrs, free movement and membership fee included. Burnham has said he hopes Britain rejoins "in my lifetime", but a manifesto pledge is "for another day". Brentry, anyone? 🍿

🧀 London's cheese board. HSBC is leaving Canary Wharf's tower for the City, so Qatar's investment fund is punching giant terraces into it for a billion pound Swiss cheese makeover, complete with a hotel and a glass cloud on top. Fancy a wedge with your skyline?

🕯️ Three decades on. Police have charged a 65 year old man living in north London with genocide related offences linked to Rwanda in 1994, the first such charges ever brought in the UK. Officers say Britain will not be a safe haven, with six more people still under investigation.

☣️ Off the scale. Blood tests near a chemical factory in Lancashire found 70% of 49 residents had forever chemical levels that could raise their cancer risk. The chemical, once used in non-stick pans, is now banned. 100+ locals are weighing a first-of-its-kind UK lawsuit.

GOOD NEWS… for Greenland after Trump signed a defence deal with the leaders of Denmark and Greenland. Denmark keeps its sovereignty, Greenland keeps its right to go independent, and the US gets two new bases. It still needs a vote in both parliaments.

BAD NEWS… for Trump's victory lap, as critics point out the US already had broad military access under a 1951 pact. Months of threats to buy the island got America mostly what it already had. 🙄

👧 Daddy's girl. Male bosses of small Danish firms hire more women after their first daughter is born, lifting women's pay 4.4% relative to men's. The effect lasts for years, with no hit to sales. Funny how it takes a daughter… 🙄

🍇 Harvesting earlier. Climate change has shifted France's grape harvest almost a full month earlier, and wine output could hit its lowest level in 70 yrs. Growers are now being paid to uproot vines instead of planting more.

🏛️ Sorry, AI got nosy. OpenAI admits one of its models broke into several Australian government health data portals while just trying to answer research questions, then told the govt via a public inbox months later. Canberra is not amused.

☕ Coffee plus. Beyond the caffeine buzz, coffee may be messing with your gut microbes, iron levels and even your medications. It also explains why roughly a third of us need the loo minutes after that first cup. Decaf does it too.

🧁 Rise and run. Runners are downing baking soda before races, as it helps muscles hold off the burn in short, hard efforts. The gain is small (1-3%) and the usual side effect is a dash to the loo. Maybe save it for the cake instead… 🥴

🩺 The silent killer. 37% of adults in England have high blood pressure, a major cause of strokes and heart attacks, and 59% of them don't know it. Even on pills, only half have it under control. Over 40? Most pharmacies check it free.

📖 Shelf life. Forget Amazon, young readers are flocking to actual bookshops after seeing titles go viral on TikTok, helping independent stores hit a 13 year high. One owner says customers now buy books purely as shelfie props. Buying books you'll never read? Still counts.

🧩 Twist and shout. A 6yo broke the women's Rubik's cube world record, averaging 4.27 secs a solve. She beat her own record from 3 days earlier and trains up to 3hrs a day. Some of us are still stuck on the first side… 🫠

📻 AI beats Room 40. An unsolved 1918 German radio message about Allied ship movements has finally been decoded using ChatGPT, and it even checked out against real Royal Navy logs. Slightly worrying how fast the machines are catching up on history's cold cases.

⚖️ Umm… say what? Tesla's lawyers argued in court that a racial slur can, in some contexts, be a term of respect, as California takes the carmaker to trial over alleged racism against more than 6,000 Black workers at its Fremont factory.

I have a love-hate relationship with Amazon. It’s consumerism at its most convenient and at its worst. Ignore for a moment the thousands of scam products, employee safety issues, and the despicable wealth disparity of its CEO. But the sheer wastefulness of Amazon is off the charts!

Yet, I’m addicted and I hate myself for it. As I look through my Amazon Subscribe & Save items, I can’t help but enjoy the convenience of getting my 6-pack of Oat Milk delivered every month with a 15% discount, including my bulk order of toilet paper. Both things that I can’t easily carry on a London pavement.

Anyone else suffering from this love-hate relationship?
